Qutub Minar at a glance

Qutub Minar, also written Qutb Minar, is a tower of 72.5 m in the south of Delhi and part of a larger complex of historic monuments. The ASI dates the foundation to 1199, with the first storey built under Qutbu'd-Din Aibak and the upper storeys added under Iltutmish. UNESCO has listed the Qutb Minar and its monuments since 1993. When you search for Qutub Minar, you will find both spellings, and both mean the same place.

People often visit the minar on the same day as the Humayun's Tomb, as both are monuments of the south of the city that appear on many private city tours. Read the Humayun's Tomb page for the second stop, and use the things to do page to place the complex among the other sights.

Our picks: Qutub Minar tours

Our take: The private Qutub Minar tour is the focused visit with priority entry. The evening city tour adds Qutub Minar to a longer drive, and the old and new city tour includes it only with a matching option.

Qutub Minar tickets

Prices from the district tourism page.

The district page lists 600 INR in cash or 550 INR online for foreign visitors. Indian visitors and the SAARC and BIMSTEC nationals named on that page pay 50 INR in cash or 35 INR online. The online prices show that a digital ticket exists, but they do not say that online booking is mandatory, so you may still buy at the gate. Extra service fees, quotas and cancellation rules are not listed, so read them at the time of booking.

Children under 15 enter free according to the ASI. The district page words this as up to 15, so a visitor aged exactly 15 should carry a ticket budget and not rely on a free entry.

One private tour with a skip-the-line entry and a guide meets near the Qutub Minar ticket centre, and the entry tickets are an option. A hotel transfer depends on the option too. The private full-day Old and New Delhi tour visits the Qutub Minar, with monument tickets only if you choose the entrance fee option.

Can you climb Qutub Minar?

No ascent is available to plan for.

Do not plan to climb the tower. A PTI report of 12.09.2026 says that the inside of the Qutb Minar remains closed to visitors, so you see the minar from the ground. The same report lists the Jamali Kamali tomb as closed. These are the facts as reported on that date, so look for a notice at the gate in case anything has changed.

Opening hours and the evening

The ASI gives sunrise to 20:00. An evening city tour with a private guide includes a stop at the Qutub Minar, together with the Rashtrapati Bhavan, India Gate, Safdarjung's Tomb and the Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, but the monument closes at 20:00, so do not count on evening access. A tour of that kind does not take you inside the Presidential Palace either.

Mehrauli and the Qutb complex

The tower stands in the Mehrauli area of south Delhi, inside a complex with several older structures. The ASI makes a difference between the minaret and the surrounding monuments, and it helps to do the same on site. Look at the tower first, then walk through the columns and the ruins around it.

A private guide can show you the wider area beyond the tower. Since the Jamali Kamali tomb is reported closed, ask your guide what the visit includes on your day. Leave some spare time in your plan, because queues and security checks can vary.

Short restrictions can also occur when delegations visit, as a press report of 13.09.2026 described for the Qutb, the Red Fort and the Humayun's Tomb. That was a temporary note, not a rule. Check the Red Fort page for the other monument mentioned.
