Taj Mahal tour from Delhi: how the day works

A Taj Mahal tour from Delhi leaves in the morning, reaches Agra, visits the Taj Mahal and returns to Delhi the same day. People also call it a Taj Mahal trip from Delhi, a Taj Mahal day tour from Delhi or an Agra tour from Delhi. Both private day trips shown below let you choose a pick-up in Delhi, so you do not need to find your own way to Agra. The Agra side of the story, with the sights in town, has its own section at the end of this page.

This page keeps to the Delhi side: where you start, how you travel and what to prepare before you leave. The tickets, the opening days and the rules at the monument are listed because they decide whether the day works at all.

Delhi to Taj Mahal: by road or by train

Two ways to reach Agra.

Travelling from Delhi to the Taj Mahal by road is what the private day trips use. A driver takes you in an air-conditioned vehicle, and the guide stays with you through the day. Driving times vary with traffic, and in winter fog can reduce visibility on the road, so this page gives no fixed travel time.

The other way is the Gatimaan Express. A secondary timetable for train 12050 shows departure from Hazrat Nizamuddin at 08:10 and arrival in Agra Cantt at 09:50. Do not mix up Hazrat Nizamuddin with New Delhi station (NDLS), which is a different station. The train does not end in Agra but runs on to Gwalior and Jhansi. Check the days it runs and the fare when you book, because they are not listed here. Plan how you get to Hazrat Nizamuddin before the early departure; the Delhi Metro page covers the network.

What the two day trips include

Pick-up, guide and car, and the options on top.

The private Taj Mahal and Agra day tour includes hotel or airport pick-up and drop-off, a live guide, an air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water, and taxes and fees. Entry fees to the monuments and a breakfast at a five-star hotel are part of an option. The other private day trip, with transfers, also uses a private air-conditioned vehicle and a live guide, with hotel pick-up and drop-off, bottled water and taxes. Entrance fees and a buffet lunch at a five-star hotel come only if you select that option. Tips for driver and guide are not included.

Pick the Delhi option when you book, since both trips offer several pick-up places, including Agra. The low list price on either trip does not cover every pick-up, ticket and meal option, so it is a starting price and not an all-inclusive package. Compare more trips on the Delhi tours page.

Taj Mahal tickets

Amounts in Indian rupees from the official visiting page.

The base ticket for other foreign visitors is 1,100 INR, including the ASI and ADA charges. Visitors from the SAARC and BIMSTEC countries pay 540 INR, and Indians and OCI holders pay 50 INR. Visiting the main mausoleum costs an additional 200 INR on top of each base ticket. Children under 15 pay no entry fee. The official page lists a discount of 50 INR on a foreign ticket bought online. The golf cart from the gate area is included for foreign visitors, according to the operator page.

Because the 1,100 INR already includes ASI and ADA, do not budget a further charge on top of it. Cash and online tickets differ, so decide before you leave Delhi how you want to buy.

Taj Mahal closed on Fridays

Hours, gates and rules.

The Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset. On Fridays the monument does not open for general visiting, so a day trip from Delhi must not fall on a Friday. Entry is through the East and West gates, and the South gate is an exit only. Vehicles that pollute may not come within 500 m, and a battery bus or golf cart takes you from the parking area to the gate zone, with parking at Shilpgram for the east gate and Amrood ka Teela for the west gate.

Rules from the operator: drones are not allowed inside or around the monument, tripods are not allowed, and food and smoking are not permitted. Switch your phone to silent or off, take no photographs inside the main mausoleum, and avoid large bags. A water bottle is allowed. Agra Fort

The second big stop of the day.

Agra Fort is the other large monument in the city, and if you want more time in Agra, see Golden Triangle tours from Delhi for a longer route. The details of the fort and of the Taj Mahal itself belong to the Agra side, and you find them at Agra Fort. This page stays with the Delhi side of the trip.
